Communism v. Noncommunism
The Vietnam War was a war between the communist regime of North Vietnam, along with its allies, and South Vietnam, allies with the U.S. The war began in 1955 and ended in 1975. During this time the rise of communist parties began. More than 3 million people were killed during the war. The Vietnam war brought out growing oppositions of the war in the U.S. The Vietnam War had a great impact on America.

Ho Chi MinhHo Chi Minh was a Vietnamese Communist leader. His name is translated as "Bringer of Light", which he wanted to bring light to Vietnam. He was prime minister and president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. When Germany defeated France Ho saw this as an opportunity for the Vietnamese nationalist cause. He then founded the Viet Minh, which was a communist-dominated independence movement. for Vietnam. Ho made negotiations with France to be able to have the Chinese withdraw. Despite his efforts to maintain peace, his militant followers called for war.

Lyndon B. JohnsonLyndon B. Johnson was elected as Vice President in the 1960's campaign. When Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Johnson was sworn in as the 36th president. As president he kept on going with what Kennedy left in motion; a new civil rights bill and a tax cut. Johnson was the head of the space program and also over saw the negotiations on the nuclear test ban treaty. Johnson also pushed a legislative agenda known as the "Great Society". In 1964 Johnson ran for presidency and won with a 61% popular vote.

ProtestsThe Vietnam War caused a lot of disagreement between the American citizens. The protests against the Vietnam War first started off with a small group of peace activists. Most of the small protests were held on college campuses. The organization Students for a Democratic Society wanted to express their oppositions of the war. The bigger protests started in 1965, after the U.S. began bombing North Vietnam. One of the most prominent anti-war protests took place on October 21, 1967. It had about 100,000 protesters and they were all gathered at the Lincoln Memorial.
